Top Japanese and US Firms Collaborate to Advance AI Chip Technology in Silicon Valley

Japanese and U.S. Tech Giants Unite to Revolutionize AI Chip Technology

Resonac Holdings Corp., a leading Japanese chip material manufacturer, announced on Monday its formation of a consortium with nine other Japanese and U.S. firms. This collaborative effort, named US-JOINT, aims to develop key technologies for manufacturing state-of-the-art semiconductors crucial for generative artificial intelligence (AI).

US-JOINT will be headquartered in Silicon Valley, focusing primarily on advancing back-end technologies for semiconductor packaging. The facility is slated to be fully operational next year.

"Today's rapidly expanding next-generation semiconductors for generative AI and autonomous driving require new approaches to advanced packaging technologies," Resonac stated in a press release. Resonac holds the world's top share in semiconductor back-end process materials, positioning it as a key player in this initiative.

Traditionally, back-end semiconductor processing has been concentrated in Asia. By relocating packaging R&D closer to major semiconductor device makers in Silicon Valley, the consortium aims to enhance technology development and address technical challenges, particularly in areas that other U.S. consortia have not sufficiently covered.

The consortium comprises ten companies, with six from Japan, including chip manufacturing equipment maker Towa Corp. and Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co., the world's leading manufacturer of photoresist, a crucial chip-making material. The four U.S. firms include semiconductor packaging company Azimuth Industrial Co. and chip toolmaker KLA Corp.

This collaboration comes as the global race to develop advanced chips intensifies to meet the growing demand for generative AI and the data centers that power it. U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel praised the initiative, stating, "This new consortium of leading American and Japanese companies in the semiconductor industry is the latest example of our two nations joining forces to accelerate the development of advanced technologies of global importance."

Resonac was established in January of last year through the integration of chemical firm Showa Denko K.K. and its subsidiary Showa Denko Materials Co. The company produces a variety of chemical and other materials, including those used in back-end chipmaking processes.

This strategic partnership between Japanese and U.S. firms marks a significant step towards pioneering technological advancements in the semiconductor industry, particularly in AI. By pooling resources and expertise, the US-JOINT consortium is poised to make groundbreaking contributions to the future of AI and semiconductor technology.
