iPhone 17 Pro Max to Feature Advanced 48MP Tetraprism Camera for Enhanced Zoom and Photo Quality
According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, next year's iPhone 17 Pro Max is set to redefine smartphone photography with an upgraded 48-megapixel Tetraprism camera. Kuo's latest investor note, published on Medium, details that the key improvement will be a 1/2.6" 48MP CIS sensor, a significant upgrade from the 1/3.1" 12MP sensor expected in this year's iPhone 16 Pro models.
In 2024, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to feature Tetraprism telephoto lenses, marking a departure from the previous exclusivity of the technology to the larger Pro Max variant seen in the iPhone 15 series. This advancement means both iPhone 16 Pro models will offer at least 5x optical zoom and up to 25x digital zoom capabilities.
Kuo indicates some uncertainty regarding whether the upgraded Tetraprism camera will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Should this be the case, both iPhone 18 Pro models are slated to receive it by 2026. The new Tetraprism camera necessitates redesigned prisms, which must have a more compact form to minimize the camera's profile, according to Kuo.
This report aligns with earlier predictions by Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities, who stated last year that the iPhone 17 Pro Max's enhanced 48MP telephoto lens would be optimized for Apple Vision Pro. This enhancement would allow for spatial video recording with 3D depth, leveraging the main and ultra-wide lenses when the phone is held horizontally.
Pu previously mentioned that the iPhone 16 Pro models would include a 48MP ultra-wide lens, making the iPhone 17 Pro Max the first iPhone with an entire rear camera system composed of 48-megapixel lenses. For context, current iPhone 15 Pro models feature a 48MP main lens alongside 12MP ultra-wide and telephoto lenses.
Looking ahead to 2027, Kuo anticipates further advancements in iPhone camera technology with a significantly improved Tetraprism camera offering enhanced optical zoom capabilities. This evolution may involve increasing the number of prisms to extend the light path, potentially necessitating a rebranding as the configuration becomes more complex.
