iOS 18 Introduces 'Recovered' Album in Photos for Restoring Lost or Damaged Media

Recovered' Album in Photos for Restoring Lost or Damaged Media (iOS 18)

iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia Introduce New Photos App Feature for Recovering Lost or Damaged Media

Apple's upcoming updates, iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, will include a significant enhancement to the Photos app aimed at helping users recover lost or damaged photos and videos more effectively.

One of the standout features is the introduction of the "Recovered" album within the Utilities section of the Photos app. This album automatically appears if there are any photos or videos on the device that are not part of the main Photos library. Users can simply tap into the Recovered album to explore and manage these recovered media files, with options to permanently delete or restore them back to the Photos library.

Lost photos and videos can occur due to various reasons such as database corruption, issues with saving images from camera apps, or complications arising from third-party apps managing the Photo Library. The new feature ensures a streamlined process for recovery:

  1. Open the Photos app and navigate to Albums.
  2. Scroll down to Utilities and select the Recovered album.
  3. Tap on individual photos or videos to preview them, or use Select to manage multiple items.
  4. Choose to permanently delete or restore the selected media.

Upon upgrading to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS Sequoia, devices will automatically scan for recoverable photos and videos, providing immediate access to any missing content.

It’s important to note that the Recovered album appears only if there are lost media files on the device. This enhancement addresses previous issues, such as the database corruption bug seen in iOS 17.5.1 and iPadOS 17.5.1, where deleted photos unexpectedly reappeared in the Photo Library.

The new Recovered album feature is currently available in beta versions for developers and public beta testers, with a planned public release scheduled for this fall.
