The 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), China's largest AI event, is set to commence in Shanghai this Thursday, showcasing over 1,500 AI products and systems. Premier Li Qiang will inaugurate the conference, themed "Governing AI for Good and for All," highlighting China's efforts to establish crucial AI standards amidst escalating tensions with the United States and international sanctions.
This year's seventh edition of WAIC comes shortly after China secured a diplomatic victory at the UN General Assembly with a resolution promoting a "free, open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory" environment for AI development among nations, contrasting recent geopolitical tensions.
More than 500 enterprises are expected to participate, with prominent figures from major tech firms scheduled to speak. Among the speakers is Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who praised China's capabilities in AI during last year's conference. Other notable speakers include Robin Li Yanhong of Baidu, Eric Jing of Ant Group, and Wang Jian of Alibaba's cloud computing unit.
SenseTime, a leading Chinese AI company, plans to unveil its upgraded large language model (LLM), SenseNova 5.5, at the event. The conference will also feature Chinese semiconductor developers showcasing AI chips, aiming to fill gaps left by US tech restrictions, including companies like Iluvatar Corex, Moore Threads, Sophgo, Enflame Technology (backed by Tencent), and Biren Technology.
Huawei's AI chip unit, Ascend, will host a specialized forum focusing on the computational demands of large AI models. The event underscores China's commitment to advancing AI technologies despite international challenges and regulatory pressures.
