Apple's Revolutionary 5G Chip Set to Debut in iPhone SE 4 and Ultra-Thin iPhone 17
Since 2018, Apple has been quietly toiling away on its own 5G modem for iPhones, a project that has faced numerous hurdles and delays. Now, it appears that the tech giant is on the cusp of a breakthrough.
In a recent post on social media platform X, renowned Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that two iPhone models featuring Apple’s proprietary 5G modem are slated for release in 2025. This includes the eagerly anticipated fourth-generation iPhone SE in the first quarter and a brand-new, ultra-thin iPhone 17 model in the third quarter.
Currently, all iPhones sold by Apple are equipped with Qualcomm modems for cellular connectivity. However, earlier this year, Apple extended its 5G modem supply agreement with Qualcomm for iPhone launches through 2026. This indicates that Apple's shift to its in-house 5G chips will be a gradual process, spanning several years.
Apple's journey towards self-reliance in 5G technology took a significant step in 2019 when it acquired the majority of Intel's smartphone modem business. While it's still unclear whether Apple's 5G chip will offer noticeable benefits over Qualcomm's modems for consumers, this move will significantly reduce Apple's dependency on Qualcomm. This is particularly noteworthy given Apple's legal history with Qualcomm, which includes a 2017 lawsuit over alleged anticompetitive practices and $1 billion in unpaid royalty rebates. The lawsuit was settled in 2019.
As Apple prepares to introduce its game-changing 5G technology, the iPhone SE 4 and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 are set to mark the beginning of a new era in mobile connectivity.
